Gramma's Nut Bread

This recipe is traditional in the Walsh family.

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 4 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon of salt
  • 1 cup of chopped walnuts
  • 1 egg
  • 1½ cups of milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla (see notes below)
  • ¼ cup of shortening, melted
  1. Mix the flour, sugar, baking powder and salt.
  2. Add the milk, egg and shortening.
  3. Pour into a greased 9 inch loaf pan.
  4. Drop on the floor a few times to let out bubbles.
  5. Let stand for 20 minutes.
  6. Bake at 350 degrees F for one hour or until done. (see notes below)

Commentary

I questioned using 4 teaspoons of baking powder until I found a recipe on-line called Old Fashioned Walnut Bread that had that amount, and the rest of the ingredients were nearly identical. That recipe also had 1 teaspoon of vanilla which I did try, and the results were pronounced as just like Gramma's. I baked the bread for 1 hour and 13 minutes.
