Sawing

Sawing by Hand

Royoba Pull Saw

I have a Z-Saw S-250 Double-Edge Ryoba Saw, purchased from Rockler.

In the Rockler specifications, the "pitch" is given as 1.40 mm, which is a TPI of 18 (25.4 / 1.4). This corresponds to my observation of the crosscut side. There's nothing about the rip side, so I took a look and the pitch varies from 11 TPI near the handle to 7 TPI at the other end. The thickness is given as 0.50mm (0.02") and the kerf as 0.70mm (0.027"). This all agrees with my measurements. In use, I can stuff about 0.03" of feeler gauge into the kerf but scratches due to the tooth set mean that I lose a bit more wood after smoothing the cut faces. This is still much less than the table saw.

Fine-Tooth Razor Pull Saw

I have a Zona #35500 Fine-Tooth Razor Saw, purchased from hobbylink's store on eBay.

The manufacturer describes this as a 32 TPI pull saw with a 0.01" blade thickness, 6½" blade length and 1 3/16" blade depth (under the backing bar). I agree with all this, except that the depth is more like 1⅛". I investigated the kerf width for myself. There is a set, but it's very, very small. I could get 0.011" of feeler gauge in the kerf, but not 0.012". I can get my flush cut saw into the kerf to continue the cut only if I'm very careful on the push to prevent it binding. If I lay the saw on its side as if to perform a flush cut, then it will raise a fine dust (which the flush cut saw won't).

Flush-Cut Pull Saw

I have a Gyokucho No. 1151 Double Edged 125mm Flush Cutting Saw, probably purchased from Woodcraft.

The specifications packaged with the saw give the pitch as 1.3mm (20 TPI) on one side and 1.0mm (25 TPI) on the other and the blade thickness as 0.3mm (0.012"). As this is a flush cut saw with no set, the kerf will be the same as the blade thickness. This all agrees with my measurements. Woodcraft give the TPI as 21 / 32. The blade is 125 mm (5") long.

Sawing by Machine

I have a table saw.

I don't have a band saw.
