My Midi Wood Lathe

The Delta 46-250 Midi Lathe

A friend, on hearing of my modest success with my DIY "micro" lathe, offered to give me the midi lathe he inherited from his father (he already had a better one). I said yes. I made a bench for it, bought the essential accessories on eBay and so I now have a "real" lathe. It's a Delta Model 46-250 from around 2001 (that's the date of the User Manual). Here's the overview from Fine Woodworking, dated Oct 25, 2005 (from which I stole the photograph at right). Highlights are :

  • Distance Between Centers : 14½ inches (37 inches with the bed extension, which I have)
  • Swing : 10 inches (that means that the axis is 5 inches above the bed)
  • Speeds : 500, 800, 1250, 1800, 2650, 3700 r.p.m. (set by moving a belt between pairs of pulleys)
