Chain and Box Puzzle

In the photograph at right, the chain is curly maple and the box is bocote. I also made a chain of African padauk, two chains with links alternately of maple and walnut, a second box of bocote and one of maple and leopardwood with narrow bands of African padauk, but forgot to photograph them.

NOT AVAILABLE. Made specifically for Elisa and Winston. Presented on Christmas day (but, not the one pictured, they got the African padauk chain and the maple / leopardwood box.) Also, Mary Ann selected the maple/walnut/maple/walnut/maple chain and one of the bocote boxes as a gift to someone else.

Wall Clock in Maple Burl

Face is maple burl. Hour dots are birch dowel made black with a Sharpie® marker. Wood finish is Danish oil. Quartz clock mechanism is made in the USA and features a silent, continuous sweep second hand. Requires one AA battery, supplied. 4¼" wide by 5¼" tall.

Wall Clock in Spalted Maple Burl

Face is spalted maple burl. Hour dots are birch dowel made black with Mixol pigment, which turned out to be a bad idea. Wood finish is Danish oil, which picked up the pigment and resulted in a kind-of shadow. Quartz clock mechanism is made in the USA and features a silent, continuous sweep second hand. Requires one AA battery, supplied. 4¼" square.

Slab-Lid Box in Pau Ferro and Bird's Eye Maple

Bolivian rosewood (pau ferro †) carcase. Maple corner splines. Bird's eye maple lid. Wood finish is Danish oil. Black felt on bottom inside. 4¾" by 3½" by 1¼" high.

† Pau ferro is Machaerium scleroxylon. One of its common names is Bolivian rosewood. Unlike true rosewoods (Dalbergia spp.), it is not endangered and can be exported without problems.

Seven-Function Ratcheting Screwdrivers

These handy tools use the WoodRiver Model JS4300A-4 ratcheting screwdriver mechanism. This can be configured as a #1 or #2 Phillips screwdriver, a medium or large flat-head screwdriver or a 1/4", 5/16" or 7/16" hex nut driver. All parts store on the tool, so there is nothing to leave behind. The ratcheting mechanism can be locked or set for clockwise or counter-clockwise using the black control ring just above the handle. My contribution is a hand-turned handle in an exotic wood of your selection (or cherry, which isn't considered exotic). The wood finish is Danish oil. See the following sections for handles.
