Walnut Bowls

1 — March 24, 2025, American Black Walnut

• Dimensions : 14.6 cm (5¾") diameter, 4.8 cm (1⅞") tall, 7.6 cm (3") diameter foot.
• Weight : 102g (3.6 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : The charm of this bowl lies entirely in the growth rings. There is no discernable figure. Summer and winter wood are strongly differentiated with pleasing year-to-year variation. The bowl faces out from the center of the tree and the intersection of its curve with the growth rings gives rise to the expected oval shape in the bottom. One small spot on the rim is quite pale and may be the transition to sapwood. No flaws, which is consistent with the absence of grain distortion or figure.

3 — March 25, 2025, Curly Claro Walnut

• Dimensions : 15.0 cm (5⅞") diameter, 5.3 cm (2⅛") tall, 8.9 cm (3½") diameter foot.
• Weight : 119g (4.2 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : This bowl shows clear growth rings but also, on one side, significant figure. The open side faces out from the center of the tree, but at an angle of perhaps 20° so that the expected oval shape where the curve of the bowl intersects the growth rings is part way up one side. The figure extends away from this oval, towards the other side of the bowl, and shows some degree of chatoyance. No flaws, which is consistent with the absence of grain distortion and light figure.

4 — February 12^th, 2025, Crotch Curly Claro Walnut

• Dimensions : 13.5 cm (5⁵/₁₆") diameter, 4.5 cm (1¾") tall, 6.8 cm (2⅝") diameter foot.
• Weight : 59g (2.2 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : Strong growth rings crossed in places by tiger stripe figure with one small wild area. Some chatoyance. Two small flaws on outside only, filled with glue and sanding dust, barely visible.

5 — February 14^th, 2025, Curly Claro Walnut

• Dimensions : 14.3 cm (5⅝") diameter, 4.7 cm (1⅞") tall, 7.0 cm (2¾") diameter foot.
• Weight : 83g (3.0 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : Tiger stripe figure on one side only has good chatoyance. On the other side, three small knots add interest. One very small flaw, filled with glue and sanding dust, almost invisible.

6 — February 15^th, 2025, Curly Claro Walnut

• Dimensions : 14.9 cm (5⅞") diameter, 4.6 cm (1⅞") tall, 6.9 cm (2¾") diameter foot.
• Weight : 112g (4.0 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : Lots of tiger stripe figure with strong chatoyance. Distinct growth rings around small knots. Three very small flaws, filled with glue and sanding dust, almost invisible.

• Dimensions : 17.4 cm (6⅞") diameter, 5.2 cm (just over 2") tall, 8.0 cm (3⅛") diameter foot.
• Weight : 130g (4.7 ounces).
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : Good figure, tiger stripe and wild, with some chatoyance. Several small flaws in wild area, filled with glue and sanding dust, only visible on close inspection. One larger (1.0 cm) flaw similarly treated and more visible. Medium / dark color. probably claro walnut, but I can't be sure.

9 — February 23^rd, 2025, Curly Claro Walnut

• Dimensions : 15.2 cm (6") diameter, 4.5 cm (1¾") tall, 7.2 cm (2¹³/₁₆") diameter foot.
• Weight 91g (3.3 ounces).:
• Finish : Finished with Danish oil, which is non-toxic but not certified food safe.
• Description : Distinct growth rings in one area and wild figure elsewhere with some chatoyance. Two large flaws (cracks) filled with black epoxy, visible on cursory inspection, one on the outside only. Cracks and wild figure suggest some burl wood.
