Introduction TS-233 Basic Setup

Network Attached StorageIf you, the reader, don't know what a NAS is, then I recommend that you don't start with the Wikipedia article as it dives right in the deep end and I doubt that it will help you. You could try the Simple English Wikipedia article, but that barely sticks a toe in the water and you could get about as much information just carefully considering the name. Using Network-Attached Storage at HomeThis area of my wiki is about my use of a network-attached storage device (NAS) on my home network. I mention my old network-attached storage system, a D-Link DNS-321, which I installed in 2008. Then I explain my reasons for replacing it with a new one. I selected the QNAP TS-233 and so I briefly explain my choice and list the other systems that I considered. In among all this, there is also information about the original old-school hard drives ('spinning rust') and the more up-to-date solid state disks that I now use. The bulk of the material here describes the process of setting up the new device. This is, in large part, for my reference. I may want to come back here in several years time to remind myself how I did something if I've decided it should be otherwise. I've included mistakes that I made and have gone to considerable effort to attribute them to poor documentation from the manufacturer rather than my own stupidity. In case any of this is useful or interesting to other people, I have tried to make my descriptions and explanations clear.
